Juan Garcia
Juan Garcia serves on the Agriculture & Livestock Committee and the Defense Affairs & State-Federal Relations Committee.
During his first legislative session in 2007, Representative Garcia was a champion for military interests, successfully passing measures effecting adoption of a child by a person serving in the military and asking Congress to support legislation for veterans’ health care budget reform. In addition, he co-authored legislation regarding tuition rebates for Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) students and tuition and fee exemptions for the children of certain military personnel. Garcia also fought tirelessly to ensure more open government in Texas by helping to pass Proposition 11, which requires the Texas House and Senate to record all final votes, publish the votes in their official journals and on the Internet, and maintain the voting records online.
After completing his naval officer and flight training, Garcia received his “Wings of Gold” at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. Commander Garcia flew 30 armed missions in the Persian Gulf, served as a top aide to the deputy Commander in Chief of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe, and served in Operation Allied Force in Kosovo. His military awards include the Joint Commendation Medal, the Naval Commendation Medal, and the Naval Achievement Medal.
Garcia left active duty in 2004 and continues to serve as an instructor pilot at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi with the Naval Reserves. Garcia was recently promoted to Commander and will assume command of VT-28 Rangers Squadron Augment Unit in October 2008.
A practicing lawyer, Garcia has chaired the Board of Citizens for Educational Excellence, serves on the Board of Governors for Leadership Corpus Christi, the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation, the Corpus Christi Barrios Association, the Surfrider Environmental Group, received certification as a legal volunteer at the Corpus Christi Women’s Shelter, and has been an on-air host for the area’s PBS television affiliate.
Garcia and his wife Denise met while classmates at Harvard Law. They have four children and live in Corpus Christi.
