NeTseO Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America is to honor state Rep. Mark Homer, D-Paris, Saturday, with the 2009 Distinguished Citizen Award.
A 5:30 p.m. reception kicks off activities at Love Civic Center followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m., during which Homer is to receive the award.

“People are considered for this award on how they best exemplify their community,” said David Dean, council executive director.

Each year the award is given to individuals who have demonstrated integrity and genuine concern for others in both their professional and personal lives, and Homer has proven himself to be an outstanding legislator, fair and honest businessman and outstanding father and husband, Dean said.

“We see Mark everywhere and he is involved in the life of Paris and Lamar County,” Dean said. “Part of the scout law is to be a good citizen and a person with good moral character and that is what you see in Mark.”

Homer was raised in Paris and is a graduate of Paris High School and Texas A&M University, where he received an animal science degree. He received his MBA from Angelo State University. Later, he would join his father, Frank Homer, in the family Sonic Drive In business, which now operates 18 stores in Texas and Florida.

He and his wife Jennifer are parents of three children; Hanna, Harrison and Hayden and are members of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Paris, where he has served as a member of the Parish Council and Scripture Reader. He is also an active community member, where he serves on many local children’s charity boards and institutions.

A few of his accomplishments include The Texas Association of School Administrators Award; Marvin Gibbs Award; Texas Association of Community Schools Distinguished Award; Texas Rural Education Association Award; Texas of Lawsuit Reform Lone Star Award and becoming a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.

Homer represents District 3, which includes the counties of Lamar, Delta, Hopkins, Franklin, Titus and Red River. He was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in November 1998 and took office on January 12, 1999.

He is currently chairman of the House Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism, and also serves on the Land and Resources Management Committee.

Everyone is encouraged to come out and show support by attending the dinner. Seating for the dinner will be limited to the first 300 participants.
