Stephen Frost Campaign
Representative Stephen Frost was the leading vote-getter at last Saturday night’s New Boston Straw Poll. The event was sponsored by the New Boston Chamber of Commerce. (Official results are attached.)
Frost defeated his opponent by an astounding 44-point margin, 72% to 28%. The raw vote total was 147 to 55 in a crowd of active civic leaders. The poll was open to voters from both parties as well as independents.
Tim Eason, the Libertarian in the race, was not a choice in the straw poll voting. However, his name will appear on November’s ballot.
Other results from the event indicate that the electorate was decidedly non-partisan. The second leading vote-getter on the night was Incumbent Republican District Judge Ralph Burgess who won his contest with 69% of the vote.
Political observers in Northeast Texas are wondering aloud if Frost’s opponent is ever going to join the race. The presumed challenger did not take time to attend the straw poll. He also failed to appear at a candidate forum in Morris County earlier in the week.
Others attribute the poor response to Frost’s opponent to a widespread perception in Northeast Texas that he was recruited from outside of the district to run in the race. His being begged into the arena by Austin political insiders might be one logical explanation for his apparent ambivalence toward getting out of the house.
Representative Frost offered this comment:
“I’m humbled by this show of support. These straw poll results are a gratifying way to start the political season. I believe they’re a testament to my independent record and the hard work we’ve done on behalf of the people of District One.
“Regardless of whether my opponent ever joins the fight, I plan on running a tireless campaign that’s built around the issues that matter to the people of Northeast Texas. And I plan to win.”
